Common test ranges
- 20–80 Hz: deep bass and rumble
- 80–250 Hz: bass body and punch
- 250 Hz–2 kHz: mids and vocal body
- 2–6 kHz: presence and clarity

Common mistakes
- Starting at high volume. A pure tone at full volume can be painful and can stress small drivers, especially at the extremes. Start near 20% and raise slowly.
- Expecting tiny speakers to play 40 Hz. Laptop speakers and earbuds roll off in the bass. Silence at 40 Hz usually means the driver, not a bug.
- Confusing inaudible with absent. Above about 15 kHz many adults hear nothing even though the tone is playing. Trust the readout, not just your ears.
- Leaving a tone running too long. Sustained single frequencies fatigue your ears fast and can mask the problem you are listening for. Test in short bursts.
- Judging one device in isolation. To tell speaker faults from source faults, compare the same frequency on headphones and on speakers.

What frequency is a standard tuning reference?
440 Hz (the note A4) is the international concert-pitch standard and a comfortable mid tone for general testing. The generator defaults to 440 Hz, and the preset chips cover bass through treble.
Why can't I hear the high-frequency tones?
Human hearing tops out around 20 kHz and the limit falls with age, so many adults hear nothing above 15 to 16 kHz. The tone is still playing. Trust the on-screen readout.
Can a constant tone damage my speakers or hearing?
At low volume, no. Loud sustained tones, particularly at a driver's resonant frequency, can stress speakers, and prolonged loud tones are hard on your ears. Keep it quiet and test in short bursts.
