How to use this calculator

Enter your home square footage, the number of floors, your wall construction type, where your primary router is located, and your ISP plan speed. The calculator returns a recommended mesh node count, estimated placement zones, and node-to-node spacing range.

Tips for success

  • Use total finished square footage. Include the main floor, upstairs bedrooms, and any basement space you want covered. Exclude unfinished areas you never use.
  • Pick the dominant wall type. If your home is mostly drywall with one brick fireplace wall, choose drywall. Mixed-material homes generally behave like the dominant type.
  • Router placement matters more than most people realize. A router in the basement utility room loses one full node of effective range compared to the same router centrally placed on the main floor.
  • Use the estimate as a floor, not a ceiling. Real-world obstacles (appliances, fish tanks, thick doors, tile bathrooms) can cut range further. If you are borderline, round up.
  • ISP speed above 500 Mbps benefits from wired backhaul. Wireless backhaul consumes roughly half the band for inter-node traffic. A gigabit plan over two wireless hops may deliver only 200-300 Mbps at the furthest node.

Wi-Fi signal through walls

Not all walls block Wi-Fi equally. Understanding attenuation helps you place nodes where they can see each other cleanly.

Common mistakes

  • Placing a node inside a cabinet or closet. Solid cabinet walls block the same signal the node is trying to project. Mount nodes in open areas at chest height or higher.
  • Putting two nodes too close together. Nodes within 10 ft of each other overlap heavily and leave the rest of the home uncovered. Spread them out to split coverage evenly.
  • Ignoring the ISP modem location. The primary node connects to the modem, so modem placement limits where node 1 can go. If the modem is in the basement, plan an extra node to compensate.
  • Buying a system without checking backhaul type. Entry-level mesh kits (one radio band for both clients and backhaul) cut total throughput significantly. Tri-band systems or wired backhaul avoid this.
  • Expecting mesh to fix a slow ISP plan. Mesh improves coverage, not raw speed. A 25 Mbps ISP plan with great mesh coverage is still a 25 Mbps home network.

How many mesh nodes do I need for a 2,000 sq ft home?

Most 2,000 sq ft drywall-construction homes on one floor work well with 2 nodes. Add one node per extra floor and one more if your router is in a corner or basement.

Does wall material really matter for mesh Wi-Fi range?

Yes. Drywall loses about 3-5 dB per wall, brick 6-10 dB, and concrete 10-15 dB. A home with concrete or brick walls may need twice the nodes of an equivalent drywall home.

What is the maximum spacing between mesh nodes?

For reliable wireless backhaul, keep nodes within 30-40 ft (9-12 m) of each other in drywall homes. Dense wall materials cut that to 20-25 ft (6-7.5 m).

Do I need wired backhaul for my mesh system?

Will mesh Wi-Fi fix a slow ISP connection?

No. Mesh improves coverage and reduces dead zones, but cannot increase the speed coming from your modem. If your ISP plan is too slow, more nodes will not help.
