How to use this calculator

Enter your trip distance, choose whether you are using kilometres or miles, then enter your vehicle's fuel economy and current fuel price. The calculator converts units automatically and estimates the total fuel required along with the trip fuel cost, so you can plan your driving budget with less guesswork.

Tips for success

  • Round trip or one way: Use round-trip distance if you want the total cost for the full journey.
  • Real economy beats official ratings: Real-world fuel economy is often worse than official ratings, especially in winter or heavy traffic.
  • Add a buffer for tough conditions: Towing, cargo, strong headwinds, or mountain terrain can add 10–20% to your estimate.
  • US vs. Canada units: MPG and per-gallon pricing suit U.S. planning; L/100 km and per-litre suit Canada.
  • Use the higher route price: If fuel prices vary along the route, use the worst-case price to avoid underestimating your budget.
  • Recalculate before you leave: Fuel prices can shift significantly between when you plan and when you depart.
  • City vs. highway: Mixed-city driving typically yields 15–25% worse economy than pure highway cruising.
  • Fair vehicle comparison: Use the same distance and fuel price for each vehicle so the comparison stays apples-to-apples.

Practical note

This tool estimates fuel cost only. Tolls, parking, hotel stops, food, and idle time are not included, so treat the result as your fuel budget baseline.

FAQ

Does this tool work for both km and miles?

Yes. You can enter trip distance in kilometres or miles. The calculator also converts the distance for you in the result area so you can see both systems more easily.

Can I use MPG instead of L/100 km?

Yes. Select MPG in the fuel economy dropdown and the calculator will estimate the cost using that input. It also shows the converted economy value to help you compare units.

Should I enter one-way or round-trip distance?

Enter whichever total you want to estimate. If you want the full cost to go there and back, enter the round-trip distance.

Why might my actual fuel cost be higher than the estimate?

Real cost can be higher because of traffic, idling, cold weather, towing, roof racks, hills, aggressive acceleration, and changes in fuel price after you calculate.

Can I use this to compare two vehicles?

Absolutely. Run the same trip distance and fuel price with each vehicle's fuel economy to see which one is likely to cost less in fuel.
