Why log every fertilizer application?
Two reasons. (1) Annual total nitrogen: residential cool-season lawns should land at about 3 to 4 lb actual N per 1,000 sq ft per year; warm-season lawns about 2 to 3 lb. Without a log, most homeowners over- or under-feed by a wide margin. (2) Pattern recognition: when the lawn struggles, the log tells you whether you applied at the right rate, the right product, the right soil temperature, and watered in correctly. Memory exaggerates. How do I compute actual N from a fertilizer bag?
Actual N (lb) = bag weight (lb) × N percent (the first number on the bag) ÷ 100. Example: a 15 lb bag of 24-0-6 contains 15 × 0.24 = 3.6 lb of actual N. Application rate = actual N ÷ lawn area in thousands of sq ft. For 5,000 sq ft (5 thousand): 3.6 ÷ 5 = 0.72 lb N per 1,000 sq ft. When should I not fertilize?
Five no-fertilize windows. (1) Drought stress: stressed grass cannot use the nutrients and salts in the fertilizer concentrate burn the roots. (2) Dormant season: cool-season grass goes summer-dormant above 90 F (32 C); both bands go winter-dormant below 50 F (10 C) soil. (3) Within 3 weeks before or after seeding: starter blends are an exception, but standard high-N products burn seedlings. (4) Frozen or saturated ground: granules cannot dissolve and wash off in runoff. (5) Right before heavy rain: a thunderstorm in the first 24 hours washes granules off before they activate. Time fertilizer to the grass biology and the weather, not the calendar alone.
How often should I soil-test?
Every 2 to 3 years for established residential lawns. A cooperative-extension lab (US, about USD 15 to 25) or provincial agronomy office (Canada, about CAD 20 to 35) reports pH, available N, P, K, organic matter, and CEC, with custom recommendations. Without a soil test, most homeowners over-apply phosphorus (P) because they buy general-purpose blends; many US states and Canadian provinces restrict P unless soil test confirms deficiency.
