Watering Schedule Log
One-page weekly grid for tracking when each garden zone or container received water, how much it got, and how it responded across a four-week cycle.
Pair with the Watering Schedule Calculator to dial in gallons per session and the Drip Irrigation Flow Rate Calculator for total flow per zone.
Watering Schedule Log
Track each zone day by day across four weeks. Note gallons or drip-line minutes per session in each cell. Tally the weekly total in the right-hand column.

Notes & Observations
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I water a vegetable garden?
A typical vegetable garden wants 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, delivered as 2 to 3 deep waterings rather than daily light sprinklings. In peak summer heat (above 90°F or 32°C), bump to 1.5 to 2 inches per week and split across 3 to 4 sessions. Containers dry out faster and may need daily water during heat waves; in-ground beds can usually go 2 to 3 days between waterings.
What should I record in a watering log?
Track the date and zone for each watering, the volume (gallons or drip-line minutes), and a brief note on conditions (hot day, recent rain, wilting observed). Over a season the log reveals which zones consistently need more or less water than the schedule assumed and which crops respond well to deep versus frequent watering. The weekly total tells you whether the garden is hitting its 1 to 1.5 inch target.
Does climate zone change watering frequency?
Yes. USDA climate zones describe winter cold tolerance, but evapotranspiration (the rate water leaves the soil and the plant) varies by zone in summer too. Hot, dry zones (Phoenix, Albuquerque) need 50 to 100 percent more water than humid eastern zones for the same crop. Use the climate zone field at the top of the log to remind yourself which baseline applies.
Should I water in the morning or evening?
Morning is best. Plants take up water during daylight, so morning watering matches demand. Foliage that gets wet in the morning dries quickly, reducing fungal disease risk. Evening watering leaves leaves wet through the night, which encourages mildew and rot. If morning is impossible, drip irrigation at the soil surface (not overhead spray) is fine any time of day.
