Why diesel goes bad differently than gasoline
Gasoline ages chemically: light hydrocarbons evaporate, ethanol pulls water out of the air and separates, and the remaining liquid grows varnish. Diesel barely cares about any of that. It is a heavier, less volatile fuel with no ethanol to phase-separate.
The dominant failure mode for stored diesel is biological. A film of water collects at the bottom of the tank from condensation, and bacteria, yeasts, and fungi colonize the boundary between the water and the diesel. The colony excretes acids, sludge, and a slimy biomass (often called "diesel bug") that clogs filters within hours, plugs injectors, and corrodes tank steel. A secondary mode is oxidation: long-stored fuel slowly forms gum and asphaltenes that clog the same parts even without microbes.
One twist matters for modern fuel: ULSD (ultra-low-sulfur diesel, required in the U.S. for on-road use since 2010) is more vulnerable to microbial growth than the older high-sulfur formulations. Sulfur compounds were mildly antimicrobial; stripping them out solved an air-quality problem and created a storage problem. ULSD also has lower lubricity, which is why additive packages matter more than they used to.

Pump diesel in the U.S. is not a single product. The shelf-life numbers above assume straight ULSD. Common variations:
- ULSD (No. 2 diesel, 15 ppm sulfur): the standard on-road fuel. Longest shelf life of the common formulations, roughly 6 to 12 months untreated.
- Off-road / dyed diesel: chemically identical to on-road ULSD, just dyed red for tax purposes. Same shelf life. Legal only for non-highway use (farm equipment, generators, heating oil).
- B5 to B20 biodiesel blends: 5 to 20 percent biodiesel by volume. Biodiesel is hygroscopic (it pulls water out of the air) and is more biologically active, so blends store noticeably worse. Subtract about 25 to 50 percent from the ULSD shelf-life number depending on the percentage of biodiesel.
- B100 (pure biodiesel): not a long-term storage fuel. Plan on 6 months at the outside, less in warm climates.
- Renewable diesel (HVO): chemically nearly identical to ULSD but produced from fats or oils via hydrotreatment rather than transesterification. Stores about as well as ULSD.
- Winter blend (No. 1 / No. 2 mix): blended with kerosene to lower the cloud and gel points in cold months. Shelf life is similar to ULSD, but kerosene-rich blends carry slightly less energy per gallon.

These are realistic ranges, not guarantees. The variables that shift you toward the low end are heat, partial fills (more condensation), and humid climates. The variables that push you toward the high end are cool consistent storage, full tanks, and the discipline to actually re-treat.
What biocide and stabilizer actually do
These two additives solve different problems and are not interchangeable. Serious long-term storage uses both.
- Biocides (Biobor JF, FPPF Killem, Valvtect Bioguard) kill bacteria, yeasts, and fungi on contact and prevent regrowth for months. They do nothing for oxidation. Biocides are slightly toxic to handle but burn off cleanly during combustion. Dose at fill time per the label; shock-dose at the labeled higher rate if you find existing growth.
- Stabilizers (PRI-D, Sta-Bil Diesel, Power Service Diesel Kleen) inhibit oxidation, slow gum and asphaltene formation, and improve cetane and lubricity. Most also include a moisture demulsifier that helps water separate to the bottom where it can be drained. They do not kill microbes.
- Use them together on any tank you intend to keep beyond 12 months. Biocide to keep the bottom clean, stabilizer to keep the diesel itself stable, and an annual top-up of stabilizer if storage is going to stretch into year three or beyond.
Signs diesel has gone bad
Catching aged diesel before it reaches the engine is the difference between a top-up and a tear-down.
- Cloudy or hazy appearance: water in suspension, an early warning sign. Cold storage can also cause haze (wax) without contamination, but a haze that does not clear after warming up is water.
- Dark sediment at the bottom: "coffee grounds" texture indicates oxidation byproducts (asphaltenes) settling out. Drainable through the bottom port on most tanks.
- Slimy black or green growth at the water boundary: active microbial colony. The biomass clogs filters within hours of stirring up the tank.
- Sour or rotten smell: normal diesel smells slightly oily and slightly sweet. Sour, eggy, or "swamp" odors mean the bugs are active.
- Rapid filter clogging after refilling: a generator that ran fine until you topped it off, then dies a few hours later, almost always pulled stirred-up sludge into the filter.
- Color change to very dark brown or black: heavy oxidation. Fresh ULSD is pale yellow to slightly amber. Black means the fuel has had a long time to react with air.
What to do with bad diesel
- Lightly aged (cloudy, no visible growth, no smell): polish through a fuel-water separator and dilute roughly 1 part old to 5 parts fresh. Run it through a tolerant engine first (tractor, older non-emissions truck) before mixing it into a modern common-rail diesel.
- Visible sediment but no microbial growth: drain the bottom inch into a clear jar to confirm, then polish the rest with a 10-micron pre-filter into clean drums. Treat the polished fuel with stabilizer and use it within 6 months.
- Microbial growth or strong sour smell: do not put it in any engine you care about. Drain the entire tank, scrub it, and dispose of the bad fuel as hazardous waste. Many fuel suppliers will take old diesel back for recycling at no charge; municipal hazardous-waste sites accept it for a small fee.
- Never pour diesel on the ground or down a drain. One gallon of diesel can contaminate roughly a million gallons of groundwater, and storm drains are not treatment systems.
Inspection schedule
- Monthly visual check: look through the sight glass or fill port. Note the color and clarity, and write it in a log. Catching a haze that wasn't there last month is the cheapest fix you'll ever make.
- Quarterly water draw: open the bottom drain valve briefly into a clear jar and check for water at the bottom. A teaspoon is normal in a large tank, an inch is not.
- Annual biocide top-up if the tank rotation is slow (less than one full turnover per year). Keep a small bottle of biocide and a small bottle of stabilizer with the tank so the dose-and-go habit is friction-free.
- Every 5 years or after any incident: pump the tank, clean the bottom, and refill with fresh fuel. This is preventive maintenance, not a failure response.
