Frequently Asked Questions

How much propane should I keep in reserve for emergencies?

For emergency preparedness, keep enough propane to run your most critical appliances for at least 72 hours. A standard 20 lb (5-gallon) BBQ tank holds roughly 430,000 BTUs, enough to run a typical camp stove for 20–25 hours of cooking. Track your tank levels on this log so you always know your current reserve before an emergency arises.

How long can propane be safely stored?

Propane itself has an indefinite shelf life, the fuel does not degrade. The limiting factor is the condition of the storage tank. DOT cylinders (portable tanks) have a 12-year lifespan from the manufacture date stamped on the collar before they require recertification or replacement. Inspect tanks annually for rust, damage, or valve issues and have them recertified or replaced on schedule.

How do I check how full a propane tank is?

Pour warm (not boiling) water down the side of the tank and run your hand along it, the tank will feel cool where liquid propane is present and warm above that line. That boundary is your approximate fill level. Some tanks have float gauges built into the valve. You can also weigh the tank: subtract the empty weight (stamped on the collar as 'Tare Weight') from the current weight; each pound over tare weight equals approximately 0.24 gallons of propane.
