Indeterminate (vining) tomatoes produce 10 to 20 lb (4.5 to 9 kg) per plant continuously across a long 4 to 6 month season. They need strong staking and ongoing pruning of suckers.

The calculator computes per-variety yield × plant count × setup modifier × sun modifier, then converts to family servings and canning jars.

Math: total yield (lb) = per_plant_yield × plant_count × setup_modifier × sun_modifier; fresh servings = total × 4; cooked sauce servings = total × 2; canning quart-jars = total / 3. Less than 4 hours of sun triggers the sun interlock and blocks the math.

Tips for success

  • 6 hours of sun is the floor, 8+ hours is the target. Below 6 hours, plants put energy into vine growth instead of fruit and you get tall sprawling plants with very few tomatoes. The sun interlock at less than 4 hours just makes this official.
  • Water deeply, at the base, in the morning. 1 to 2 in (25 to 50 mm) per week including rainfall. Water at the base with a soaker hose or watering can, not from overhead. Wet foliage at night invites blight and other fungal diseases.

  • Containers cut yield 20 to 40 percent. Indeterminate varieties need a 15+ gallon (57+ L) container minimum for reasonable production; smaller pots stunt the plant. Determinate, patio, and cherry varieties work fine in 5 to 10 gallon (19 to 38 L) containers.
  • Mulch 2 to 3 in (5 to 7.5 cm) deep. Retains moisture, prevents soil splash onto leaves (the most common disease vector), suppresses weeds, regulates soil temperature. Straw, leaf mold, and wood chips all work; avoid plastic in hot climates.

  • Heirloom beefsteak (Brandywine, Cherokee Purple, German Johnson, Black Krim): 8 to 12 lb (3.6 to 5.4 kg) per plant. Midpoint 10 lb. Best flavor; harder to grow; more cracking and fruit loss.

US and Canada climate notes (3-band model)

The yield math is universal but planting and harvest windows shift by climate band. Tomatoes are warm-season; they need air above 50 F (10 C) overnight and soil above 60 F (16 C) at planting.

  • Band 1 (Mild Pacific NW, Southern CA, Mid-US, USDA 7 to 9): transplant mid-March to mid-April after last frost. Long season favors indeterminate slicers and paste varieties.
  • Band 2 (Upper US, Southern Canadian metros Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax; USDA 4 to 6, NRCan 5b to 6b): transplant mid-May to early June. Mix of indeterminate and short-season determinate. Reliable short-season varieties: Early Girl, Stupice, Bush Beefsteak.
  • Band 3 (Prairie SK / MB / AB interior + Alaska + Northern Canadian interior; USDA 2 to 4, NRCan 0 to 4): transplant late May to mid-June, often with row cover the first 2 weeks. Common mistakes

  • Planting in too little sun. Below 6 hours, you get vines without fruit. Move the plant or accept lettuce instead.
  • Watering inconsistently. Erratic moisture causes blossom-end rot and cracking. Set up a soaker hose on a timer.
  • Wetting the foliage. Overhead watering at night is the fastest path to early blight. Water at the base in the morning.
  • Skipping the stake or cage. Indeterminate varieties without strong support sprawl, fruit rots on the ground, and harvest becomes impossible. Stake at planting time.
  • Pruning determinate plants. Every leaf node is potential fruit on a determinate variety; pruning reduces total yield. Only indeterminate varieties want sucker pinching.
  • Fertilizing with high-N lawn fertilizer. Pushes leaf growth at the expense of fruit. Use a tomato-specific blend (lower N, higher K) like Espoma Tomato-Tone or generic 4-7-10.
  • Refrigerating fresh tomatoes. Kills flavor compounds. Counter-ripen instead, even partially-green fruit ripens fine at room temp in 3 to 7 days.
